General Orthopedic

www.orthoinfo.aaos.org The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) is the largest national orthopedic organization in the US and has solid general patient information for common problems. Many explanations are also available in Spanish.  The information is kept updated, but there are few links for further study.

www.orthopedics.about.com  This site provides basic orthopedic information in lay language with some links for further information.  A part of the New York Times Company, it does include a lot of advertising.

www.abledata.com   This website has assistive-technology options, helpful for the disabled,  and is sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

www.centerwatch.com  This is a private company that publishes an extensive list of clinical trials (ongoing medical research experiments).

www.ncbi.nim.nih.gov/pubmed  Helpful to look up medical articles.  The National Institute of Health supports this site which includes recent abstracts (summaries) from scientific and medical journals, and some “epub” abstracts, released before publication.  Most of the information is written in technical language, written for and by medical professionals.

www.mayohealth.org  This site has general medical information from the Mayo Clinic. The information is easy to understand and includes write-ups on common pediatric orthopedic problems.

www.aclprevention.org           This site features an exercise program designed to help prevent ligament injuries in athletes, a problem that is more common in adolescent females.  Females with certain knee alignment are more prone to injury, especially increased knock-knee alignment.

www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/       Review of current nutrition information, including some medical and exercise information.  Mostly focuses on adults.  However, this is one of the best and most comprehensive sites available, very informative yet written in lay language.
